Technology Recruiting Backstory

We were initially introduced to the world of advanced technology through a search for a construction  client.  Recruiting Ellis-Don Construction’s first Director of MIS in the early 90’s made us aware of the transformative nature of technology — and we were hooked!

Key assignments early on with IBM, Oracle, and Digital Equipment laid the foundation for critical executive searches with CrossKeys, Pivotal CRM, Simware/NetManage, Halogen Software, Protus, Mosaid, DY4 and CML Technologies.

Scope of Work:

Today, Perry-Martel conduct assignments for computing, software, telecommunications, and Internet clients as well as for the information systems function.

  • Within hardware and electronics, segments include both hardware and electronics clients with products including PCs, workstations, networking hardware, peripherals, chips, hardware components and mainframes.
  • Software segments include systems and applications software, multimedia products and systems integration.
  • Telecommunications segments include regulated and non-regulated, wireless, cellular, OTCs and PTTs, satellite, video, fiber optics, voice-messaging, data communications, and network management.
  • Within the IT information systems function, we conduct assignments for a range of positions, including CIOs and VPs of Systems Development for multinational companies as well as for smaller, start-up organizations.
  • We conduct senior-level Internet recruiting assignments worldwide, with a focus on electronic commerce, content, infrastructure and services.

Authoring and speaking backstory…

It was when Nortel Networks started to implode at the beginning of this century that David wrote his first book.  Ironically he did it so as to not have to keep taking calls from laid-off Nortel staff who’s outplacement counseling consisted of one single sheet of white paper with the names of the top 10 recruiting firms in town.  Perry-Martel was first on that list. 

It started out innocently enough.  David’s idea was to create a Top 10 List of books to read which could be posted on Perry-Martel’s website.  Unfortunately all the books he read at the book store where hopelessly out of date, including What Color is Your Parachute.  His list was soon replaced with a 100 page guide titled ‘The Headhunters Guide to The New Economy’

That book was sold online with proceeds going to the Western Quebec Education Foundation.  The foundation having been previously established by David and his father to help raise money to build English speaking schools in the province of Quebec. 

Headhunters Guide to The New Economy, became ‘Career Guide for the High Tech Professional: Where the Jobs Are Now and How to Land  Them’ when Career Press bought the rights.  David asked Jay Conrad Levinson to write the Foreword for that book and solicited book reviews from Dr. Stephen R, Covey, Seth Godin, Guy Kawasaki, and Brian Tracy.   Two years later David coauthored ‘Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters with Jay Conrad Levinson. 

In 2005 the three free chapters from Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters’ which contained a section titled “Super-sizing Your Online Network”, about how to use a new networking platform called LinkedIn, was downloaded more than 5 million times (David was the 103007th member of LinkedIn.  He’s an early adopter.).  In the ensuing years since Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters was first released, there have been two new editions.  Anita and David started Guerrilla Job Search International in 2008 and have toured across Canada and the United States teaching people how to land great jobs using creativity and a little moxie.

David has written two books for employers: ‘Hiring Greatness: How to Recruit Your Dream Team and Crush the Competition, (WILEY 2016) and ‘Executive Recruiting for Dummies’(WILEY 2017).  ‘Hiring Greatness’ is also available in simplified Chinese recently.  Anita and David speak internationally about executive recruiting and leadership.
