A Resilient Mindset: The Only Thing That Can Save You from Your Circumstances

I was at the pinnacle of my career.

I’d just won a potential $50M piece of business. Days later, on Good Friday no less, I suffered a massive stroke leaving me unable to walk, talk, read or write.

The neurologists cautioned my family, ‘David may remain in that vegetative state for the rest of his life.’

In a world that can sometimes seem full of obstacles and setbacks, facing an uncertain global economy, I want to share my personal story to spark the incredible potential that lies within You.  I’ll write from personal experience about the power of a determined mindset.

I understand that when you’re looking for work it’s not uncommon to be faced with a defeatist attitude, and little optimism. I assure you: giving in to those negative thoughts will only hold you back from achieving the success you truly deserve.

I know the job market is a competitive arena, and it’s easy to feel discouraged when you’re faced with rejection or uncertainty. But I want you to know that the power to change your circumstances is within your grasp. It’s a matter of choosing to believe in yourself, to trust in your abilities, to remain steadfast in your pursuit of your dreams, and to action your plan.

So, let me ask you this: what would happen if you chose to cast aside your defeatist attitude and instead embraced a mindset of unwavering self-belief?

Imagine the possibilities that would unfold before you, the opportunities that would arise, and the sense of accomplishment you would feel. You absolutely have the power to transform your job hunt into a journey of growth and triumph. Countless others have walked this trail before you.

Now, please let me share my story about the power of a resilient mindset in the hopes it inspires you to greatness.

I was at the pinnacle of my career; I’d just won a potential $50M piece of business.  Days later – Good Friday no less – I suffered a massive stroke. It left me unable to walk, talk, read or write. The hospital’s neurologists warned my family about my future.’

On my last day in hospital, we discovered through a friend that two competitors had opportunistically called our clients the previous week to let them know I was ‘braindead’.  I left the hospital to face what looked like a grim reality.

But let me tell you, I had a different plan in mind. My attitude was unbreakable, and I refused to let this setback define me. I was determined to regain my abilities and prove the naysayers wrong. I knew I had no choice but to relearn how to read, write, and speak, no matter the difficulties that lay ahead.

My family and business partners were my rock.  My eight-year-old daughter, for example, bought me multiple ‘letters books’ from the Dollar Store so I could practice writing while in hospital. Shannon graded my attempts with care and kindness, praising my flawless scribbles and lifting me up with encouragement when I struggled. Her unwavering love and guidance inspired me to press on.

In the ensuing years I’ve managed to write not one, not two, but four books on job search and recruiting. I knew that I had a wealth of knowledge and experience to offer, and I was determined to share it with the world. Plus, let’s be real, I needed to find a new source of revenue while I rebuilt my practice.

But wait, there’s more to this story. Not only did I bounce back from a devastating stroke, but I also went on to create something incredible. Within a year of starting what became my 7-year journey or recovery, I launched a Job Search Boot Camp incorporating my Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters books.

That boot camp and now its successor, has helped countless job seekers find their dream careers and given them the tools to navigate the job market with confidence and ease. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, and I’m even prouder of the impact I’ve made on others’ lives.

The next time you’re facing a setback or feeling stuck, remember my story. When someone tries to tell you that you can’t achieve your goals, remember my story.  Don’t let anyone else dictate your limitations. Keep pushing forward. Be careful who’s advice you listen to. Trust in yourself.  Accept help from everyone who offers it.  People are cheering for you.

Here again I speak from experience. My journey taught me that anything is possible with the right mindset and determination.

You have the power within you to achieve greatness and make a difference in the world. It’s time to take control of your mindset and unleash your full potential.

David Perry

P.S. I hope my story inspires you to overcome your obstacles and chase your dreams.  Now go!  Be resilient and write your story because right now there’s someone who needs to be inspired by your resilient mindset.

P.P.S. I’ll be waiting to read your story of triumph.
